The year 2020 brought changes to the way we consume alcohol, as restaurants and bars were shut down for a good part of the year in order to mitigate the spread of a new pandemic. At-home consumption was the name of the game for a while, leading to some innovations in the alcoholic beverage industry (think wine delivery and Zoom happy hours). As your neighborhood Roswell tavern, we like to keep on top of hot trends when it comes to booze, so we’ve rounded up what we think will be the biggest wine trends in 2021.
Though not legal in all 50 states just yet, ordering wine online is a convenient way to get your favorite wines delivered to your doorstep. That’s why in 2020, online retailers like wine.com saw a massive uptick in orders, and wine subscription services became more commonplace. Having your favorite wine delivered whenever you want, effectively eliminating trips to the liquor store, was a big draw during lockdowns in 2020. This is a trend that we’re sure will last well into 2021, if not beyond.
Last year was a year of unprecedented growth for hard seltzers like White Claw, which experienced a huge rise in popularity. This year, the wine industry will likely look to get in on the trend. While some brands already produce wine seltzers, wine producers are expected to jump into high gear in 2021 and tap into the market with new and innovative products.
If you’re like us, you probably hoped that 2021 would at least bring a sense that things would be going back to normal. But that’s not the case just yet, and the trend of virtual wine tastings in lieu of in-person winery visits is likely to last. Because wineries have had to limit their capacity, many have turned to virtual experiences like virtual wine tastings as a way to keep business going, albeit at a distance. Some wineries are even going so far as to create mini tasting kits, sending participants small bottles of wine made specially for the event. We expect this kind of innovation to continue to be popular well into 2021.
